Although ultimately sorted into Gryffindor, Neville Longbottom asked the Sorting Hat to place him in Hufflepuff, feeling that that house's reputation as a "load o' duffers" better suited his character.

There were certain exceptions, however, such as Harry's friendliness with Cho Chang and Luna Lovegood, both from Ravenclaw, as well as Cho's relationship with Cedric Diggory, a Hufflepuff. According to Rubeus Hagrid, "there's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin",[24] (though this was, for the most part correct, there were a few exceptions, former Gryffindor Peter Pettigrew the most notable of them). None of this necessarily meant, however, that all Slytherins were evil, such as Horace Slughorn,[8] Regulus Black,[25] Andromeda Black,[8] Leta Lestrange, Merlin and Narcissa Malfoy[26] for example.

They are accessed through a pile of large barrels, found stacked in a shadowy stone recess on a right-hand side corridor near the kitchens. The barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row, will open if tapped in the rhythm of 'Helga Hufflepuff'. "Once you’ve opened the barrel, crawl inside and along the passageway behind it, and you will emerge into the cosiest common room of them all. It is round and earthy and low-ceilinged; it always feels sunny, and its circular windows have a view of rippling grass and dandelions. She is the Head of Herbology at Hogwarts and brings interesting plants, including ones that dance and talk, to the Hufflepuff common room. This is possibly the reason why Hufflepuffs are generally good at herbology.

Rowling told Snitchseeker that Hufflepuff was her favorite house in many regards, and that, when given the option to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts or leave, virtually every of-age Hufflepuff stayed to fight (while the Slytherins left and the Ravenclaws were split about 50/50).

It is also prominently featured in merchandise, such as clothing, jewelry, and collectibles. The crest has become a symbol of Hufflepuff pride and identity for fans of the series. Hufflepuff's common room is round and cozy, with low ceilings and circular windows showing rippling grass and dandelions. The room always seems sunny, a feeling enhanced by the copper furnishings and the overstuffed yellow and black sofas and chairs. Plants hang from the ceiling or sit on windowsills; many of these are unusual specimens that Professor Sprout brings as decorations. The badger represents Hufflepuff and appears in many places throughout Hogwarts – including the decorative dancing badgers carved into a wooden mantelpiece in the house common room!

Hufflepuff had the most people fight in the Battle of Hogwarts besides Gryffindor. The Goblet of Fire, an impartial judge, chooses what it believes to be the best Champion from each school for the Triwizard Tournament. Once you've tried the Hogwarts Sorting Experience, you can find out more about your house, and how the houses came to be in the first place. To do this, Godric Gryffindor used his magical hat – henceforward known as the Sorting Hat – to decide which children should go into which house, and so it has been ever since with a yearly Sorting Ceremony that places each new pupil into their own new home. The primary trait of a Hufflepuff is loyalty, and you can see that Tonks has it by the way she supports her husband Remus Lupin and the Order of the Phoenix.

Hufflepuff is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. The emblematic animal is a badger, and yellow and black are its colours.

The Hufflepuff Crest and Personal Identity

If you were lucky enough to be sorted into this house, we can imagine you’re the type of person who has a strong moral compass, always works hard, is the most loyal friend, knows it is the taking part that counts and always has the best snacks. If the Sorting Hat placed you in this noble house, then you are most likely ambitious, shrewd and possibly destined for greatness. We can imagine you’re the kind of person who is always one step ahead, has a dark sense of humour, thinks reputation is important, takes pride in their appearance and doesn’t let anyone see their soft side. When I first planned the series, I expected Harry to visit all four house common rooms during his time at Hogwarts. There came a point when I realised that there was never going to be a valid reason to enter the Hufflepuff room.

The Hufflepuff common room itself is reminiscent of a badger sett, as it’s cosy, round and low-ceilinged. Out of all the houses, many would say that Hufflepuff has the least exciting characteristics. Where Gryffindors are known for their daring, Slytherin for their cunning and Ravenclaw for their intelligence, being known for working hard might not seem quite as glamorous. Nymphadora Tonks was a highly skilled Auror with a punky style, a penchant for bright pink hair and as a Metamorphmagus was able to change her appearance at will. Having said that, just because Hufflepuff might not appear to be quite as flashy as the other houses, that doesn’t make them dull in the slightest.

While all houses are clearly hard-working, for Hufflepuffs it’s a priority, and you can see that in the way Newt Scamander goes about his research for his book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Cedric Diggory was known for his loyalty to his friends and family, as well as his dedication to his studies and Quidditch. Nymphadora Tonks was known for her loyalty to the Order of the Phoenix and her dedication to her work as an Auror. Students are encouraged to be loyal to their friends, family, and community. They are also taught to be dedicated to their studies and to strive for excellence.

However, this was merely a misunderstanding of the Sorting Hat's poem. A portrait over the wooden mantelpiece (carved all over with decorative dancing badgers) shows Helga Hufflepuff, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School, toasting her students with a tiny, two-handled golden cup. Small, round windows just level with the ground at the foot of the castle show a pleasant view of rippling grass and dandelions, and, occasionally, passing feet. These low windows notwithstanding, the room feels perennially sunny. Overall, the core traits of Hufflepuffs make them reliable, loyal and kind-hearted witches and wizards, which is proven when you look at the people who were part of this house. It represents the values and characteristics that are important to Hufflepuff House and its students.

Gryffindor house is where you would find the pluckiest and most daring students (there’s a reason the house symbol is the brave lion). The house colours are scarlet and gold, the common room lies up in Gryffindor Tower and the Head of House is Professor Minerva McGonagall. You can read more about the founders of Hogwarts or the wily old Sorting Hat and even your house ghost. It’s also worth noting that Professor Sprout was one of Neville Longbottom’s mentors.

The Hufflepuff crest is a powerful symbol that represents the values and spirit of Hufflepuff House. We encourage fans to embrace the spirit of Hufflepuff and to use the crest as a reminder of the importance of hard work, dedication, patience, and loyalty. Hufflepuff has produced the fewest number of dark wizards than any other house at Hogwarts. Their cheerful and friendly demeanor can probably account for this property of the House.

Most notably, we see this professor in action when she’s teaching the kids about Mandrakes during Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. While Hufflepuffs aren’t commonly considered assertive, like Cedric, Tonks proves that she is courageous and valiant as well as loyal and fair through her magical skills, her work as an auror, and as a member of the society working to take down the dark lord. While there are kind people in every Hogwarts house, and it’s a value everyone should have, in Hufflepuff, it’s a priority to treat people in a friendly, generous and considerate way. Clearly, Cedric has the patience to figure out the egg clue in Goblet of Fire before passing the knowledge along to Harry. While other houses may act on instinct, for Hufflepuffs, it’s important to wait for the perfect moment to act.

Also, it’s worth noting that Cedric’s classmate Hannah Abbott was also a Hufflepuff, and she went on to marry Neville Longbottom after the Battle of Hogwarts. Both characters were loyal allies of Harry Potter, especially when it came to defending the world against Voldemort. He helps the young wizard figure out a clue for a challenge, and at the very end, he tragically dies after being transported to Voldemort’s hiding place while trying to help Harry. Overall, Cedric isn’t around long, but he’s a fantastic hero and a fantastic Hufflepuff. Do you want to talk about side characters who really came through in Harry Potter?
